The Alaskan Klee Kai was developed during the 1970s by Linda Spurlin of Alaska, who wanted to create a lap sized Husky. Alaskan Klee Kai come in 3 sizes toy, miniature and standard. They stand from 12 to 17 inches at the shoulder and can weigh between 5 to 25 pounds. They are various coat colors and eye color combinations. They are loyal, smart, active and good tiny protectors of your home via barking to alert you. Klee Kai need a lot of socialization as puppies to avoid becoming skittish as adults with strangers. This involves letting numerous people handle a puppy and taking them out of their comfort zone frequently, such as taking them for coffee at a patio restaurant and letting strangers pet your puppy, going to walking trails, dog parks, etc.

The breed has been accepted into the UKC and has gained in popularity since then. It is important during your search for information about the Alaskan Klee Kai to use the national breed club as a resource to ensure a new addition to your home is an actual Alaskan Klee Kai, as there are some dogs advertised that are in no way related and are of unknown origin. Its also important even if you are looking for a companion only, that the parents are registered with the UKC.
